4 Must-See Places in Arizona

This past week I got the chance to go to Arizona with my family for Spring Break. Needless to say, it is my new favorite state! 

We were road tripping from Utah, so we headed south from Provo and hit spots like The Grand Canyon, Sedona, Route 66, and Phoenix. 

I highly recommend coming in April- the weather was incredible! 

1. Grand Canyon

The Grand Canyon was absolutely breathtaking, both in terms of beauty and cold. Normally in April the weather is perfect to visit the Grand Canyon, but a cold front had come in from Utah, so it was super windy and cold-literally taking my breath away. 

We drove through the park and stopped at some of the overlooks on the way and then headed towards The Village for a trail they have that follows along the edge of the canyon. It has rocks every few steps that shows the evolution of the formation of the canyon. Every step you take on the trail is a million years. 

There were many places for photo-ops and plenty of room on the trail for everyone! 

After the trail, we headed back to a few gift shops and then stopped at a quick grab-and-go Cafe. BE WARNED- during lunch hours, the restraunts fill up quick and food at the shops is expensive. 

2. Route 66

If you ever are in Arizona, one of your must-see stops has to be Route 66!

So nostalgic to the days when I used to watch Cars obsessively, this small pass-through town was just what we needed on the road trip for a stretch and walk. 

Old gift shops, treats, and vintage cars are just a few of the things you will see if you drive through famous Route 66. 

If you drive through Williams, Arizona, be sure to stop at Oh, Sweetie- the cutest treat shop  with the best brown sugar ice cream I have ever tasted. 

3. Sedona 

This small town city is my new favorite place. I swear it is a slice of heaven. It is the perfect blend of Arizona's notorious Red Rock, beautiful weather, and small city charm. 

The town is most famous for its unique red rock formations and the city ordinance prevents building from being too tall, so you see the formation from practically everywhere. 

We stayed in Marriott hotels for the duration of our stay, but I wish we had stayed in AirBnBs to get an even homely visit. 

There is tons to do in Sedona, but I recommend going to downtown and trying the honey samples, taking a jeep ride, and just enjoying the beautiful weather. 

Sedona is my new go-to town for vacations! 

4. Pheonix

Pheonix has a ton to offer for everyone and is very kid friendly. Our favorite spots, recommended from locals, were Nemesis Club and Soda Jerk.  

Nemesis Club is an escape room business created by someone who used to work at Disney, so everything was top notch.  Nemesis Club is behind Soda Jerk and has a 20's speakeasy vibe. You are given a code word to tell the Soda Jerk workers and they take you to a secret side door into the speakeasy inspired Nemesis Club.

Soda Jerk, the business front for Nemesis Club makes wild and yummy milkshakes overflowing with treats galore. I got the all cookies milkshake, even though I'm lactose intolerant. No regrets.

5. Arizona's Temples for the Church of Jesus Christ are some of the most beautiful temples in the world. While on our road trip, we had the privilege to visit the Mesa Temple for their Easter Pageant and the Gilbert Arizona Temple. 

The Mesa Temple is inspired by the Hawaii Temple and the grounds are absolutely gorgeous. Each side has a different color palate and the garden's are beautifully kept with native flowers from the region.

It's a personal goal of mine to photograph a wedding here and do bridals at the Mesa Temple.

As a member and lover of architecture, I can vouch for the temples in Utah and their beauty. A wedding is one of the most significant events in a person's life, and for members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints (LDS or Mormon), it can be a particularly meaningful occasion. As a member of the church, there isn’t a lot of information about how to plan your wedding and what makes it different than weddings outside of our faith. If you're planning an LDS wedding, here are some tips to help make the day special and memorable!

Provo City Center Temple in Utah

1. Choose a temple for the ceremony: LDS weddings are performed in temples, not in churches or other venues (unless you choose to do a civil ceremony as well!). The temple is considered a sacred place, and the wedding ceremony is performed by a member of the priesthood. Before choosing a temple, make sure that you and your partner are both temple-worthy, meaning you are in good standing with the church and have made the necessary preparations, such as being baptized and receiving your endowment. Contact the temple and schedule a time that works best for the big day.

2. Plan a reception: While the temple ceremony is the most important part of the wedding day it's also common to have a reception afterwards, especially if most of your family and friends aren’t members. You may do this at your local stake center which will help if you are on a lower budget, but feel free to have your reception wherever you think is best!

3. Hiring Vendors: The 3 vendors I recommend hiring for your day are a photographer, wedding planner, and DJ. I may be a bit biased as a wedding photographer, but your photographer is the most important vendor you will hire for your day. The food will end up…well you know, the flowers will wilt, the party will end, but those photographs will be there forever! Make sure you invest in your photographer. With that being said, a planning a wedding can be a lot of work, and it can be helpful to have someone to guide you through the process. A wedding planner who is familiar with the church can be a great resource, helping you with everything from choosing a temple to coordinating the reception. Lastly, I recommend a DJ (especially if you don’t have either of the two above vendors). DJ’s help make sure the day runs on schedule and they make sure to keep people on the dance floor!

4. Plan the music: Music can play a big role in an LDS wedding, both in the temple ceremony and the reception. Consider choosing hymns that are meaningful to you and your partner, and make sure to select musicians who are comfortable playing in a religious setting.

5. Choose the right attire: In the temple, both the bride and groom are expected to dress modestly and in white. This can be a simple white dress or suit, or something more elaborate, like a traditional bridal gown. Outside of the temple, you are more than welcome to wear your dress dress or anything else! Some people even opt to get sealed in their temple clothes and change back into their wedding dress for the rest of the day.

What To Wear For Your Engagement Photos

It’s a time to celebrate your love and document this exciting chapter in your life!! Engagement sessions are my favorite sessions to photograph because it is often the first time you and your significant other have had photos taken together and it’s so incredible being able to document the beginning of forever! With that, it is normally to feel a little anxious about being in front of a camera, so it's important to feel confident during the session. Here are some helpful tips I give my couples before sessions.

1. Coordinate, but don't match: One of the biggest mistakes that you can make during an engagement session is dressing in outfits that are too matchy-matchy. Unless you are very intentional about it, like the all-denim trend going around, it will feel like a flashback to the early 2000- and not in the good way. Instead, opt for coordinated outfits that complement each other but still have their own unique style.

2. Dress for the location: The location of the engagement session can also influence what you should wear. Imagine the location is a painting and we are painting you into the painting- you don’t want to look out of place. If the session is by the beautiful Utah mountains, for example, wearing whites, greys, greens, and blues would compliment the colors already existing in the scenery. Fabrics that are more natural, like linen, and that flow more would be appropriate to highlight the beautiful breezy nature of the mountains. To contrast, if you are taking photos in an urban landscape, like downtown Provo, more edgy and contrast will make you look like you fit in. Leather jackets, fire dresses, and boots will compliment the straight lines and contrast in the city.

3. Consider the season: The season in which the engagement session takes place will also play a role in what you should wear. If it’s summer, lightweight and breathable materials such as cotton and linen are ideal. Also keep in mind if you are extra sweaty; you want to be comfortable during the session and nothing is worse than knowing you have a pit stain. As a sweaty gal, antiperspirants are your best friend ;) If it’s winter, consider layers and warm fabrics. Hand warmers are also incredible.

4. Choose comfortable shoes: Even if you have the most stunning outfit, make sure they are already broken in- you don’t want to get blisters. Choose shoes that you can walk and move around in comfortably, especially if the location requires a lot of walking or standing.

5. Accessorize wisely: Accessorizing can add a pop of color and personality to your outfit, but don’t overdo it. Keep it simple with a few key pieces such as a necklace, earrings, or a scarf.

6. Be yourself: Most importantly, wear what makes you feel comfortable and confident. This is your engagement session and it should reflect your personal style and the love that you share. I live by the 5-5 rule. If it is something that you have loved for the past 5 years and could see yourself loving for the next 5 years, that’s it!

Wedding Planning after getting Engaged!

Congratulations on your engagement! This is a exciting time and the start of a new chapter in your life!!! The engagement period can be both exciting and overwhelming, as there are many things to consider and plan for. And it’s okay if it gets a little hectic or stressful, THAT IS NORMAL! Here are some steps to guide you through the process.

1. Celebrate! Take time to enjoy the moment and celebrate with your partner, family and friends. This can be a small intimate gathering or a big celebration. Make sure to include this in your wedding budget!

2. Set a wedding date: Decide on a date and make sure it works for both of you, your families and any key wedding vendors.

3. Determine your budget: Having a budget in mind will help you make important decisions and prioritize what is important to you. There is so much in this, but my biggest tips are to pick the 3 biggest things that are important to you and your significant other and create a that reflects the things most important to you.

4. Start the guest list: This will give you an idea of the size of the wedding and help with venue selection. Decide between you and your spouse if you want an intimate get together and are PARTA. And just because you have a smaller wedding doesn’t mean the cost will go down!! There are lots of vendors that happen regardless of your guest count (venue, photographer, decor, etc).

5. Choose your wedding party: Decide who will be in your wedding party and ask them to be a part of your special day. This doesn’t mean you have to spend lots of money putting together bridesmaid proposal boxes or elebroate parties; I recommend taking them out somewhere to eat or dropping by their house to ask! If you are detail oriented, think about providing a small little contract so that they know what they are getting into/paying for.

6. Start planning the details: Research wedding venues, photographers, florists, and other vendors. Make a list of the ones you like and start visiting and booking. Vendors often are booked months in advance, so start this process as soon as possible!

7. Take engagement photos: Engagement photos are a great way to commemorate this special time and they can also be used for save-the-date cards, wedding website, or even your wedding album. Often times if you book a photographer for your wedding, they will give discounts on engagement sessions!

8. Get in touch with your vendors: Contact the vendors you have chosen and start the booking process. This is also a good time to ask for referrals and recommendations from family and friends.

9. Take care of the legalities: Start researching the requirements for getting married in your area, including obtaining a marriage license. This is something that is often overlooked in the budget, but make sure to save room for legal things! Also start considering if you are going to change you name and begin researching the process.
